If you’ve ever experienced dental emergencies, you’ll know that they’re often accompanied by severe pain and discomfort. Practising good oral hygiene is the most efficient way to ensure you don’t end up needing an emergency dentist, but if an accident does happen it’s best to be prepared. Read on to find out whether or not you need an emergency dentist appointment, and for useful tips on how to deal with some of the most common dental emergencies that arise.

How do I know if I need an emergency dentist?

In general, a dental emergency is anything that causes significant or consistent pain or requires immediate professional attention. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Cracked, broken or loose teeth
  • Abscessed teeth or gums
  • Severe tooth sensitivity
  • Infections in the gum or teeth
  • Mouth sores

Don’t leave it untreated

Whenever a dental emergency strikes, it’s essential that you contact your dentist as soon as possible. Left untreated, many dental emergencies only get worse. Cracked and broken teeth can allow bacteria to enter the inner dentin layer, for example, often resulting in serious sensitivity and decay later on.

Untreated infections can also spread to the head and the neck. And while over the counter medications may temporarily dull dental pain, they won’t treat the underlying problem. Get in touch with us as soon as any symptoms occur — ring 03 9842 6675 to speak to a dentist in Donvale and to get immediate advice on the best line of treatment.

Knocked-out teeth

If you act fast, we may be able to save your tooth. First, hold the tooth by the crown and give it a gentle rinse under the tap. Then carefully try to put the tooth back into its place, making sure it’s facing the right way. You can stop any bleeding by applying gentle pressure for about 10 minutes. If you can’t put the tooth back in securely, place it in a cup of milk (or salty water, if milk is not available) and bring it to us as soon as you can.

A cracked tooth or trauma to the mouth

Rinse your mouth with warm water to help keep it clean. A cold compress can help alleviate any swelling; take pain relief if needed. Note that jaw fractures and dislocations will often require a doctor.

Abscessed teeth or gums

An abscess requires immediate treatment to prevent the infection from spreading. Make an emergency dental appointment with us as quickly as possible. In the meantime, rinsing your mouth with salt water will help keep it clean and alleviate any pain and discomfort.
