Although it should never take the place of proper brushing and flossing, mouthwash can play a valuable role in your oral hygiene programme. Find out more about how to incorporate mouthwash into your routine below.
What are the benefits of using a mouthwash?
A mouthwash not only freshens your mouth and breath – it has many dental benefits, too. Even the act of rinsing can help to dislodge food debris and remove sugars left over after a meal. Depending on the type of mouthwash you choose, your rinse can also help to combat bacteria and protect your gums against gum disease (periodontitis). And if you opt for a mouthwash with fluoride, it will also help to prevent tooth decay. That’s because this natural mineral works to strengthen your tooth enamel, making it less susceptible to cavity-causing acids.
What mouthwash should I use?
There are three main types of mouthwash on the market. Your choice will depend on your specific dental health concerns. But, at Holistic Dental Donvale, we recommend choosing a fluoride mouthwash for all-round protection.
- Cosmetic mouthwashes. These mouthwashes target bad breath and mask food odour. Although they may make your mouth feel cleaner, they tend to be largely ineffective against bacteria or plaque. As such, they are really only suitable for those with superficial concerns.
- Antiseptic mouthwashes. Depending on the brand you choose, these rinses may be able to actively fight plaque and help prevent decay by killing off any bacteria that’s left behind after eating.
- Fluoride mouthwashes. These are the best option for those with tooth decay and sensitivity, as fluoride is great for strengthening and protecting the teeth from the outside.

When should I use a mouthwash?
If you rinse with mouthwash straight after cleaning your teeth, it will wash away all the concentrated fluoride from your toothpaste. It’s best to leave an hour or two between brushing and using mouthwash if possible, so try rinsing after lunch or dinner instead. We also recommend avoiding food or drink for 30 minutes after using a fluoride mouthwash so the fluoride from your wash remains on your teeth for longer.
